Ani means unique, beautiful, and exotic in Armenian. It’s a girls’ name as well as the name of one of the medieval capitals of Armenia. The City of Ani (961-1045) was a vibrant metropolis, famed for its 1,001 churches.

The background of this piece is inspired by the patterning of 13th-century Armenian khachkars (elaborate crosses carved in stone: a very identifiable form of Armenian art).
