HOURI (Hoo-ree). Houri means “flames” or “fire” in Armenian. Her hair reminded me of that. The background is inspired by embroidery from Marash (a once Armenian city over 1000 years old, now occupied by Turkey). Houri also means “Paradise Fairy” (հուրի բերի).

Hantes (hawn-tess) is the Armenian word for school program. Armenian schools take their Hanteses very seriously. The costumes are always elaborate and beautiful. The teachers deserve awards for the performances they choreograph and prepare. I always looked forward to them and they embody some of my favorite memories from my childrens’ childhood. This illustration was inspired by a photo from a hantes performed at Chamlian Armenian School in Los Angeles.
