The illustration on the cover is titled “ANUSH” (Ah-noosh), meaning “sweet” in Armenian. The word is also used to describe someone’s kind personality or the sweetness of a food and is interchangeably used as a word for dessert. Another derivative is Anushig (just add the “ig”), both as a proper name and an adjective, meaning “very pretty.”
The icons — including the wheat on Anush’s gown as well as pomegranates, the Tree of Life, and grapes in the background — are traditionally used symbols representing abundance, good fortune, and fertility. They are inspired by drawings in Armenian manuscripts as well as carvings on the walls of Geghart Monastary in Armenia.
